Shaldon

The lovely little harbourside village of Shaldon, across the river and opposite Teignmouth, always reminds me of The Mapp and Lucia stories of Nancy Mitford, and the gentility of Tilling by Sea. That of course was a bygone era, and nowadays the etiquette and pomposity have been replaced by good old-fashioned Devonshire hospitality. It’s down to earth and friendly with much to be admired; including the beautiful waterfront, with a foot ferry to Teignmouth (dependant on season etc), the superb Ness beach which is easily walkable from the village centre and characterised by the old smugglers’ tunnel you have to use to approach it, and of course the delightful village green that is still a traditional venue for fetes and village celebrations. There’s also an excellent bowling club on the green. Shaldon has it’s own smattering of good village shops, watering holes and eateries to choose from - certainly enough to keep you happy for quite a while.
Shaldon is a great place to relax, and it’s also a great base for getting to know South Devon. There’s easy access to the local resorts of Teignmouth and Torbay, Dartmoor’s just a stone’s throw, and if the ladies fancy a day in town, then both Exeter and Plymouth are a pleasant drive away. There’s golf, all kinds of water-based activities, and a wide array of tourist attractions all over South Devon. We have our own Botanical Gardens, a small Zoological Garden, and Pitch and Putt situated around the village outskirts.
There really are just too many interesting places available to put on a contact list, but here are a few that might prove useful.
